Sunscreen, Collagen, and the Hidden Signs of Sun Exposure

Most of us know sunscreen is important, but its role goes far beyond preventing a visible reaction after a sunny day.
Over time, repeated ultraviolet exposure can contribute to pigmentation, uneven texture, collagen breakdown, and increasing skin laxity. These changes often develop gradually, which is why consistent protection matters—even when the skin appears comfortable and healthy.
What Sun Exposure Can Reveal
During our consultations, our Korean skin analysis system often shows patterns of sun exposure that are not yet obvious to the naked eye.
In some cases, the difference between the two sides of the face is so distinct that we can make a good prediction about whether someone is usually the driver or the passenger. The side receiving more exposure through the vehicle window may show greater pigmentation, dryness, uneven tone, or signs of collagen decline.
It is a useful reminder that sun damage is not limited to beach days or long afternoons outdoors. It can build quietly through driving, walking, gardening, and the small amounts of exposure that occur as part of everyday life.
UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin and contribute to the gradual weakening of collagen and elastin—the structures that help skin remain firm and supported. As this process continues, the skin may begin to look thinner, less resilient, and increasingly lax.
Sunscreen cannot reverse existing changes, but it can help reduce further damage and protect the collagen your skin is still producing.
Choosing the Right Sunscreen
For everyday protection, we generally recommend a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 to 50.
The amount applied matters just as much as the number on the bottle. For the face, we suggest applying a bead of sunscreen along two fingers to help provide adequate coverage. The ears, hairline, neck, and chest are also easily missed.
Apply sunscreen as the final step in your morning skincare routine and before makeup. Reapplication is especially important during extended outdoor exposure, driving, swimming, sweating, or towelling the skin.
Many clients tell us they are cautious about sunscreen ingredients and feel more comfortable choosing a mineral-based product.
For clients who prefer a mineral option, we offer TIZO, which uses zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as its active sunscreen ingredients. Traditional mineral formulas can sometimes feel heavy or leave a noticeable white cast, but TIZO offers sheer and tinted formulations designed to blend naturally into the skin and sit comfortably under makeup.
The best sunscreen is ultimately one you trust, enjoy wearing, and will apply generously every day.
The Floresta Philosophy
At Floresta, we often describe sunscreen as one of the foundations of a long-term skin health plan.
Advanced treatments can support collagen renewal, firmness, pigmentation, and texture, but daily sun protection helps preserve that progress. Without it, the skin continues to receive the same exposure that contributed to many of those concerns in the first place.
Good skincare is not only about creating change.
It is also about protecting what you already have.
